No, just another food blog. Something I'm sure you've seen a ton of. I'm writing, because I hate every food blog I've ever read. I go to a food blog for a recipe.
- I don't want organic. I"m not against it, I just don't think its all its hyped to be.
- I don't want expensive.
- I want normal people recipes with normal people ingredients.
- I shoot for low cost meals, mostly. What's the sense if its more expensive than a similar priced ingredient in the store. BUT, this not a blog about the cost of food.
- I also like leftovers. I have 2 children and a full time job. I am NOT cooking every night of the week. I tend to cook for lunch the next day and/or another night's dinner.
- I am not afraid of fat, but avoid trans fat. I like all other types of fat, just not the trans.
So, what will tomorrow bring? Crab Rangoon! I'm very excited to make my FAVORITE Chinese food. I have some random ingredients and will figure it out tomorrow.
It started with cream cheese. I don't remember what I was going to make, but I bought 2 things of cream cheese (probably cheese cake, who doesn't love a cheese cake). Somehow the cream cheese ended up in the freezer. OOPs... a quick google told me the cheese is still good, but will not be the same after thawing, and should be ok long as its cooked in something to disguise the new texture.
I figure the new texture will be crumbly. Something I think will not be noticed in crab rangoon. I know this because my mom used to buy the best cheese balls from the 4-h group in my home town. I've made a ton of these cheeseballs myself, I remember my hands painful from hand mixing the cool cream cheese for hours, and the smell of garlic powder on my hands for days. Man they're great. I'll put the recipe up sometime. (Actually I think that's what I bought this cheese for originally, now that I think about it) Anyways, these amazing cheeseballs were only made around thanksgiving, Christmas and new years. The only kept for about a week in the fridge, and mom wanted to keep one for Easter. She would freeze it. It would be good, but really crumbly and hard to get on the crackers. So, this is what I expect my cheese to be.
I skimmed a few recipes and they had a few things in common
- garlic, I was buying some for another recipe, 50 cents a head.
- canned crab meat, I've never used crab meat of any kind in cooking. The recipes don't specify what kind and my store had white and red, so I got one of both. They were about under 2$ each.
- cream cheese (duh)
- green onion (it wasn't in all the recipes, but I've tasted hints of it in some that I've ordered and want it in mine) 50 cents a bunch
- soy sauce and/or worcestershire sauce. I think I have this in the fridge too.
- wonton wrappers, a few other recipes mentioned filo dough. I couldn't find wonton wrappers in my grocery, or another close by. So we went with the filo dough. I know I love filo, and have always thought maybe I'd make baclava, we'll see.
So I have all these ingredients, I will be making them tomorrow and will post what happens. My hope is that they are amazing and I can wrap some up and throw them in the freezer for a quick bake at a later time. As much as I love these things my husband is not a fan, so its something just for myself, and if i'm feeling nice I'll share with the kids.
Anyways welcome to the blog.
